The
Government of India has made biometric Aadhaar authentication (e-KYC)
mandatory for all domestic LPG consumers as the country faces a temporary
cooking gas supply shortage. The new rule aims to ensure that LPG cylinders
reach genuine households and prevent misuse of subsidised domestic gas.
According to
the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, every household using LPG must
complete the Aadhaar-based biometric verification process to continue
receiving LPG cylinder refills and subsidy benefits.
Why the
Government Introduced This Rule
The new
biometric authentication requirement comes at a time when LPG supply has been
under pressure in several parts of India. Officials believe that the step will
help prevent hoarding, diversion, and illegal use of domestic cylinders for
commercial purposes.
By linking
LPG connections with Aadhaar through biometric verification, the government can
identify genuine beneficiaries and reduce duplicate or fake connections in the
system.
What
Happens If You Don’t Complete LPG e-KYC
Consumers
who fail to complete the Aadhaar-based biometric authentication may face
several issues:
- LPG cylinder refills may be temporarily
stopped
- Subsidy payments credited to bank accounts could
be discontinued
- LPG booking services may be
restricted until verification is completed
Authorities
have advised consumers to finish the verification process as soon as possible
to avoid disruption of cooking gas supply.
How to
Complete LPG Biometric e-KYC
The
government has also made the process easier by allowing verification through
mobile apps. Consumers can complete e-KYC using the official apps of their LPG
provider along with the Aadhaar FaceRD app.
Steps to
complete the process
1.
Download
your LPG provider’s mobile app
2.
Log
in using the registered mobile number linked with the LPG connection
3.
Select
the e-KYC or Aadhaar authentication option
4.
Enter
your Aadhaar number
5.
Complete
face or biometric authentication using the Aadhaar FaceRD app
Consumers
can also visit their nearest LPG distributor if they face problems
completing the process online.
Who Needs
to Complete the Verification
The rule
applies to all domestic LPG consumers across India, including
beneficiaries of government schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
In some cases, Ujjwala beneficiaries may have to complete the authentication
every financial year before receiving their first LPG refill.
Government’s
Objective
Officials
say the main goals of this new rule are:
- Prevent illegal use of domestic
LPG cylinders
- Ensure subsidies reach genuine
beneficiaries
- Improve transparency in LPG
distribution
- Control misuse during supply
shortages
The
government has also encouraged consumers to complete the verification quickly
so that LPG supply remains uninterrupted.
